Riverside County has become the nation’s first large county to meet “functional zero,” a federal benchmark for making permanent housing available for all homeless veterans who seek assistance from the county.
Akita Brown was a single mother with three children. She had lost her job, lost her home, and was staying with friends and in hotels because she couldn’t find a home she could afford.
The number of homeless people living in Riverside County dropped 16 percent compared to two years ago, and the number of chronically homeless fell by 17 percent, according to a countywide survey conducted Jan. 28.
Volunteers are needed to participate in a survey of homeless people in cities and communities throughout Riverside County on Jan. 28.
Facts and other information about the potentially fatal Ebola virus are available on a new web page from Riverside County health officials.
